Guitars- Martin OM-28, Froggy Bottom F
Pickup: Pure Western Mini
Don started playing in 1977, and like most kids he was initially drawn to rock guitar, however he soon became interested in any style of guitar music.
Along with playing in a rock band in high school, he also took lessons in classical and jazz guitar, which led to a degree from the New England Conservatory. After graduating he spent many years playing in club bands throughout the Northeast, as well as teaching guitar.
In 1990 Don recorded a few instrumental rock tunes which led to a write up in "Guitar" magazine, as well as winning an international guitar competition sponsored by Kramer guitars .
He made an instructional DVD that was favorably reviewed, and wrote lessons for the Mel Bay Publication web site.
Currently he performs instrumental, fingerstyle guitar covering styles such as classical, celtic, pop, and everything in between.
When not traveling throughout New England, New York and Canada, Don teaches guitar full-time with upwards of 50 students per week.
Don says: "I've used many acoustic guitar pick-ups (Fishman,B-Band,MacIntyre) and always had a problem getting a good sound. I would always have to do extensive EQing to make it sound natural, and even when (or if) I did dial in the EQ you could hear the sound of the pick up more than I liked. I was also tired of the string balance issue of under the saddle pickups. I just wanted to get the sound of the guitar, it seemed simple enough, so I set out to find an alternative. After going to 3 guitar stores that specialize in highend acoustics, they all recommended a K&K, as did my regular guitar tech. I had a Pure Western installed in one of my guitars and couldn't believe it, the sound was so natural, the pick up seemed to be transparent"
