K&K's Artist of the Month: Doug Alan Wilcox

September 2004

A somewhat unassuming guy walks on stage and begins to play. When the tune is through he relates a quick, humorous story before beginning again. By now you're hooked with his easy persona and casual command of the stage and find yourself along for the ride.... Doug Alan Wilcox creates mini-movies - glimpses of life with all its various shadings - in words and music, in a style that might best be described as "americana-meets-pop" or "modern rustic" - a happy collision of rootsy genres.

Frequently employing non-standard guitar tunings and alternate chord voicings he manages to present songs that are complex but immediately listenable. Doug's strong belief in a grass-roots approach to performing finds him reaching his listeners one by one, just as easily plying his trade at the corner coffeeshop as the regional concert venue. The method seems to be a valid one as evidenced by the consistent number of new faces joining the ranks of his fan base.

Nationally known musicians Chuck Brodsky, Peter Mayer, Lisa Moscatiello, Debi Smith and Tanya Savory are included in the roster of players with whom Wilcox has shared a stage. Based not far outside the D.C. Capitol beltway, Doug Alan Wilcox brings his smart folk/pop with a twang to fans up and down the East Coast and beyond.

Doug uses K&K's Mini Pure Western and says: "I've been a full-time player for a number of years and am a self-confessed "tone-freak" when it comes to guitar. The quest for a natural-sounding amplified tone has been an ongoing one. Good sound, ease of use and something affordable on a working musician's income have seen me trying numerous pickup variations over the years. The quest ended recently when I finally had a K&K Pure Western installed in my OM acoustic. The sound is immediately wonderful with little or no eq adjustment and I'm surprised at how 'hot' the signal is from a passive system. I noticed right off the bat how little trouble sound tech. guys are having getting me a great acoustic punch as opposed to the laborious and often unsatisfying sound checks gone through with some of my previous rigs. This product is about as close to 'plug and play' easy as one can get while offering tonal options tremendously superior to standard under-the-saddle pickup arrangements. At this point, I would not hesitate to recommend K&K products to my touring friends."
