K&K Sound Artist of the Month
Big Al Whittle

I have worked all my life as either a teacher or a musician. I love performing.  It is a hobby - it used to be my job. My favorite venues were old peoples residential homes - but I played a million bars before settling for that. I only became a pro musician when my wife became disabled in our 20's back in the1970's.  Up to then I had been a teacher of English. Being a musician is quite a good job if you have similar responsibilities, as you are self employed and can choose pretty much when you work - as long as you don't care where you work!  In the 1980's I had a hit record in Germany, but nowadays I perform mainly in folk clubs and other acoustic venues.

I played in Country and Western Bands, Folk Groups, Irish Music Groups, a Jug Band - none with much success. About two years ago, I developed heart disease. So I had to cut out a heavy gigging schedule (I used to do three hour long gigs a day in the old peoples homes!). Staying at home, I have worked on my guitar technique - and I am getting some offers to play in folk clubs and at folk music festivals. If my health improves significantly, I hope to take up some of the offers.

Big Al lives in England. He was born 1949 in Boston, Lincolnshire UK. He uses the K&K Pure Western, likes open tunings - DGDGBD, CGCGCD and he keeps experimenting with new ones. All the best wishes to Al from the K&K crew!
