Artist of the Month: Janet Marlow November
2002 Janet
Marlow takes center stage with her mastery of the 10-string guitar, of
which she is one of the few artists in the world who performs on one,
as an applauded jazz vocalist and leader of the Janet Marlow Quartet.
Her fresh, personal style delights audiences which includes the musical
contributions of her husband, Alan Brennan on jazz violin, piano and percussion
at venues such as the Lincoln Center Jazz Festival, the Texaco Jazz Festival
and the Blue Note, NYC. Releasing her 8th CD this year, entitled "Latin
Lover" establishes her world class stance as a composer enjoyed on radio
playlists nationally. Janet Marlow has also dedicated herself as an educator
with master classes and published works with Mel Bay Publications and
as an advocate for inspiring children through music. Born
in London, Janet Marlow is the fifth generation of noted Russian musicians.
Classically trained, she studied for fifteen years with Maestro Andres
Segovia, Julian Bream, and Leo Brouwer. Marlow then became the protégé
of Maestro Narciso Yepes, the innovator of the ten-string guitar. Moving
from an all classical repertoire into jazz was a natural process for Janet
Marlow. This evolution began in New York where she was influenced by jazz
legends Bill Evans and Joe Pass Spending time with great players in the
midst of the New York City jazz scene led to her creating original compositions
for ten-string guitar with Quartet and arrangements with jazz singing.
Janet Marlow is approaching her place in the world of contemporary music
with a fresh flare. Janet
Marlow on K&K's Trinity System:
"As
a 10-string guitarist, it has been a unique challenge, all the way, to
create music, to find the best strings and to capture the resonance of
the instrument while projecting it powerfully and clearly through sound
systems at concert venues and festival systems. When I discovered and
installed K&K's Trinity System, the challenge of sound enhancement got
resolved. After I shock the “sound guys” at venues with the size of the
10-string guitar, I confidently proceed to plug in and balance my sound
during the sound check. My performances include the virtuosic playing
of my husband, Alan Brennan on jazz violin, who also uses the K&K System.
Balancing our acoustic sound has become an easy and quick process no matter
the size of the hall. When I travel and perform with my quartet, getting
volume and a good sound with a 10-string acoustic guitar with a keyboardist
and percussionist is another kind of working out. Again, with my own volume
control when the music gets hotter during the performance, I can project
my solos and accompanying without losing the crispness of the 10-string.
I fully endorse this product." Janet's
